Disability Pride Month

As June ends and July begins we transition from LGBT+ Pride Month to Disability Pride Month. There will be no displays in stores, no city-wide parades, no “ally” profile pics, but the stakes are just as dire. Pride exists for the same reason for all – in a world that continually attempts to erase our rights, cast us a “sinners,” and insists we need healed from being ourselves, the very concept of being allowed to merely exist as we are without barriers is a far-off goal. Pride helps as we seek that goal, and hopefully changes the narrative from one of hate into one of beloved community where all are loved and valued. We live in a cruel world where evil reigns and the petty go out of their way to make life miserable for others. If you do nothing else this Disability Pride Month, find ways to subvert that – call out the jerks who block or steal accessibility, learn to think about if an event/gathering is actually accessible to customers or friends, see difference as beautiful instead of an inconvenience, and vote like hell to remove the people intent on causing us harm from office.
